Facebook Messenger: Customize Your View in a Web Browser

Facebook Messenger is a terrific tool for staying in touch with your friends and family who are on Facebook. The built-in chat functionality allows you to chat by text, video, and audio and also enables you to perform tasks such as sending money to friends, adding stickers and GIFs to your conversation, and participating in group chats.

On a web browser, the default view for a chat conversation is a chat window that appears at the bottom of your screen. If you are having a lengthy or detailed conversation however, it may become awkward to work within the small window that appears. Fortunately, there is an option to view your conversation in full-screen view.

Note: The option to change the view of a Facebook chat is limited to a web browser — this functionality does not exist on the Facebook Messenger mobile application.

View a Facebook chat in full-screen mode

Facebook chat view options
While the default view of a Facebook chat conversation is via a chat window, you can also choose to see the chat in full-screen mode. Facebook

While the default view of Facebook chat — a chat window which appears at the lower right of your screen — works great for quick conversations, if you are having a more detailed or lengthy chat, or chatting with a group of people, the chat window can seem a bit small and difficult to work with. But fear not! There is a way to view Facebook chat in full-screen mode.

How to view a Facebook chat in full-screen mode on a web browser:

  • Open your web browser
  • Go to Facebook.com by typing the URL in the address bar on your browser (or click here!)
  • Click on the Messages icon in the top right of your screen
  • Click "New Message" or select an existing conversation that you'd like to see in full-screen mode. Selecting either of these options will result in a chat window appearing.
  • On the chat window, click the "gear" icon on the top right. A menu of options will appear.
  • From the available options, select "See Full Conversation"
  • This will result in a page opening which contains your chat in the middle of the screen, along with a list of your conversations on the left side of the screen.
  • You are now able to comfortably chat now that you're in full-screen mode. You have more room in which to type your message, and there is a wider area in which to view the history of the conversation.

You're all set! Enjoy your chat.
