All versions of the NETGEAR WNR1000 router use password as the default password. As with most passwords, the WNR1000 default password is case sensitive.

Every version of the WNR1000 router uses admin as the username for logging into the router.

192.168.1.1 is a common default IP address for routers; it's also used for the NETGEAR WNR1000.

Note: There are four different hardware versions of this router but all of them use the same default information I just mentioned.

Help! The WNR1000 Default Password Doesn't Work!

If the default password doesn't work for your WNR1000 router, it just means that someone (probably you) changed it at some point but have since forgotten what the new password is. One positive thing about this is that it's not the default password of password, which is far too easy to guess!

Fortunately, all you have to do is reset your router back to its factory default settings. This will remove the not only the password you've forgotten but also the username, and restore both of them to the credentials I mentioned above.

Here's how to reset your NETGEAR WNR1000 router:

  1. Check that the power cable is plugged in and that the router is on.

  2. Turn the WNR1000 around so you have access to the back panel.

  3. Stick a paperclip or some other sharp, small object into the Reset hole to strike the button, and hold it down for 5-10 seconds or until the power light starts blinking.

  1. Wait a good 30 seconds for the router to finish resetting.

You'll know it's done when power light stops blinking and becomes a solid color.

  2. Unplug the power cable for a few seconds and then plug it back in to reboot the router.

  3. Wait another 30 seconds or so for the WNR1000 to boot up.

  4. The router has now been reset, so you can login to with the default credentials from above. Use the http://192.168.1.1 link with admin for the username and password for the password.

  1. You now need to change the default password to something more secure than a password. Even if it's really complex and hard to guess, you can store it in a free password manager to avoid forgetting it again.

You'll have to reenter the other custom settings if you want your router back in the same state it was in before you reset it. If you had a wireless network configured, for example, you'll need to enter in the SSID and password you want to use. The same is true for anything else you want, like custom DNS servers.

To avoid having to enter all this information again in the future, if you ever need to reset your router again, you can back up the router's settings to a file. The details for backing up and restoring the router's configuration can be seen in Chapter 6 of the WNR1000 manual, in the "Managing the Configuration File" section (links to the manuals are below).

What to Do When You Can't Access the WNR1000 Router

By default, you can access the NETGEAR WNR1000 router at the http://192.168.1.1 address. If you can't, it just means that the IP address has been changed since it was first set up.

Fortunately, you don't have to reset the whole router just to see what its IP address is. Instead, you just need to know what the default gateway is configured as on a computer that's connected to the router.

If you need help doing that in Windows, see How to Find Your Default Gateway IP Address.

NETGEAR WNR1000 Firmware & Manual Links

You can find all the necessary downloads, user manuals, support articles, etc. on this router through the NETGEAR WNR1000v1 Support page. If you want information on a different version of the router, just use that same link but then choose a different version under the "Select a different version" dropdown menu.

Important: It's very important to be aware of what version number you're looking at before you download firmware for your WNR1000 router. Once you're on the right page for your specific router, use the Downloads button to see all the software and firmware download links that are specific to that router.

Since there are four versions of the WNR1000 router, there's a separate user manual for each one. You can visit NETGEAR's website for the manuals or you can get to them right here: Version 1, Version 2, Version 3, Version 4.

Note: These manuals are in the PDF format.
