What is an M2V File?

How to Open, Edit, & Convert M2V Files

M2V Files
M2V Files.

A file with the M2V file extension is an MPEG-2 Video Stream file. Files of this type only store video content, so there's no audio, subtitles, etc.

M2V files are hardly ever seen alone since there's no way for audio to be stored with the video. Instead, they're commonly seen when using a DVD authoring tool, combined with audio files like WAVs or AIFs, menus, chapter points, etc. in order to build a DVD video.

Some programs used for authoring DVDs may use an M2A file along with the M2V file, which is an MPEG-1 Layer 2 Audio file.

How To Open an M2V File

M2V files can be opened for free with popular media player applications like Windows Media Player, VLC, and RealPlayer. However, these programs will only let you watch the video file, not create a DVD from the M2V file.

If you want to write the M2V file to a disc, in order to use it like a DVD, software like DVD Flick can be used. This program, and others like it, lets you create standard DVD files, like VOB, IFO, and BUP files, in a VIDEO_TS folder.

Freemake Video Converter is another program that can open M2V files for the purpose of burning them to a disc or creating an ISO image (in addition to converting the M2V file to a number of other video formats). Again, though, M2V files are video-only files, so you'd have to add an audio file to Freemake Video Convert too, and join the two together with its built-in joining option.

Another free option is Simple DVD Creator.

Though these programs aren't free to use, you can also open M2V files with Roxio Creator, Adobe Encore, CyberLink PowerDVD, and CyberLink PowerDirector. Most of these applications should be able to help you make a DVD with the M2V file and an audio file, and quite possibly even subtitle files and anything else that should be part of the DVD.

Note: There are other file types that have nothing to do with video files but might look like they have the .M2V file extension. Some examples include M4V, M2P (Maxthon 2 Browser Plugin), M2 (World of Warcraft Model Object), M21 (AXMEDIS MPEG-21), and MV_ (Movie Edit Pro Movie Backup) files - none of these file formats open in the same way that M2V files do.

If you find that an application on your PC does try to open the M2V file but it's the wrong application or if you would rather have another installed program open M2V files, see my How To Change the Default Program for a Specific File Extension guide for making that change in Windows.

How To Convert an M2V File

Any Video Converter is one example of a free video converter program that can save an M2V file to all sorts of video formats, like MP4, AVI, FLV, and others.

EncodeHD, Oxelon Media Converter, and Clone2Go Free Video Converter are a few other applications that support the M2V format.

If you need to make an M2V file, you can do so with the free Avidemux software.
