The default password for the Linksys E4200 router is admin. This password is case sensitive, so make sure you spell it just like I have it here, with no capital letters.

The username field can be left blank because the E4200 doesn't have a default username.

The Linksys E4200 does have a default IP address, though - 192.168.1.1. This is how you connect to the router to login.

Note: The Linksys E4200v2 is sold and marketed as a different router than the E4200, but it's just a slightly upgraded version of the same device.

The default password is the same for both routers, but v2 requires admin to be entered as the username.

Help! The E4200 Default Password Doesn't Work!

If the default admin password isn't working when you try to login to your Linksys E4200, what's likely happened is that you changed the password to something more secure but then forgot what you chose.

That's the caveat of choosing a new password - it's a great practice but it also means you can't easily figure out what it is. However, if you forget your E4200 password, you can just reset your Linksys router back to its factory default settings so that the password will reset to admin (you can change it again when you're done resetting it).

Here's how to reset the E4200 router:

  1. Make sure the router is plugged in and powered on.

There should be a light on somewhere to indicate this, like around the network cable or somewhere on the front of the device.

  1. Flip the router over so that you have access to the bottom.

  2. With something small and pointy (like a paperclip), press and hold down the tiny Reset button for 5-10 seconds.

The idea here is to hold the button down until all the port lights flash at the same time. The Ethernet port lights are on the back of the router.

  1. Wait a good 30 seconds for the Linksys E4200 to reset, and then unplug the power cable for a few seconds.

  2. Plug the power cable back in and wait another 30 seconds or so for the router to fully boot up.

  3. Now that the E4200 has been reset, you can access the router at http://192.168.1.1 with the default information from above. Remember that the admin username is needed for the E4200v2.

  4. You need to change the router's default password now that you've reset it to admin, which is not a secure password. To encourage you to make a complex password, and to avoid forgetting it again, you can store it in a free password manager.

Resetting the E4200 doesn't just rest the username and password but also any other custom settings you've configured. For example, if you had a wireless network set up before you reset the router, you'll have to reenter that information - the SSID, wireless password, etc.

If you want, you can back up those custom settings to a file so that you can restore all of them at once if you ever have to reset the router again in the future. It's done through the Administration > Management menu of the router. There are some screenshots you can use for a reference on Page 61 of the E4200 user manual, which is linked at the bottom of this page.

What to Do When You Can't Access the E4200 Router

If no changes have been made to the IP address of the E4200, you should be able to access the router at that address: http://192.168.1.1. However, if it has been changed, you don't need to reset the router or do anything drastic like that in order to see what it's IP address is.

Instead, you just have to know what the default gateway is set up as on a computer that's connected to the router. This IP address is the same as the router's address.

If you need help doing that in Windows, see my guide on How to Find Your Default Gateway IP Address.

Linksys E4200 Firmware & Manual Links

All the details of this router can be found on the Linksys E4200 Support page on the Linksys website.

If you're looking for firmware downloads or the Linksys Connect Setup Software downloads, you can get them on the official Linksys E4200 Downloads page.

Important: Take special notice what you're downloading when you download the firmware for the E4200 router. On that download page is a section for Hardware version 1.0 and Hardware version 2.0. A separate firmware is needed for these hardware versions.

You can get the E4200 user manual here from the Linksys website. The manual applies to both the E4200 and the E4200v2 router.

Note: The Linksys E4200 user manual is a PDF file, so you'll need a PDF reader in order to open it.
