This tutorial is only intended for desktop/laptop users (Linux, Mac, or Windows) running the Firefox browser.

Mozilla Firefox retains a record of all searches made via its integrated Search Bar, using those keywords and terms to offer suggestions during subsequent uses of the browser. While this functionality may offer a level of convenience, it can also present an issue on shared computers where others can see your previous searches which you may prefer to keep private.

To completely delete search history from Firefox, take the following steps.

  • Open your Firefox browser.
  • Click on the Firefox menu, represented by three horizontal lines and located in the upper right-hand corner of the browser window. When the drop-down menu appears, click on Options.
  • Firefox's Options dialog should now be displayed. Click on the Privacy icon, located at the top of the window.
  • Click on the clear your recent history link, found in the History section.
  • The Clear All History dialog should now be visible, overlaying your browser window. Ensure that a check mark is placed next to the Form & Search History option. Please note that you cannot clear your search history without also clearing your form history, which is information that you have entered into Web forms such as your address. Warning: If you do not want to clear any other types of information, remove all other checkmarks found in the list of data components (i.e., cookies, cache).
  • To delete your search history, click on the Clear Now button. The process should be completed almost immediately.
